Welcome to Mentor Duluth
Mentor Duluth matches youth ages 5-17 with caring community members who are committed to building a friendship with a young person.
Mentor Duluth believes that all young people have the need for a positve adult, outside of their family, to be a friend and a support. Most youth enrolled are from single parent families or two parent families with special needs. Our program puts the safety of the youth first.
Our mentors come from all walks of life. If you are dependable, enjoy working with youth and are willing to have some fun, we are looking for you! Mentoring takes place in the community and activities can be anything from sporting events or cooking dinner to hiking up the north shore or participating in activities organized by Mentor Duluth.
Mentor Trainings and Socials
We are working towards improving our training and support for our mentors. One way to do this is to provide opportunities for mentors to share and learn from each other with mentor socials. The socials will give mentors an opportunity to share stories, resources, ideas, or concerns about their matches. The socials will take place every other month at various times and locations. Mentor Duluth will provide refreshments and staff to help facilitate discussions.
Additionally, watch for more formal and specific training sessions in the monthly newsletters. So, mark your calendars; we have some great training opportunities coming up:
- November (Was originally scheduled for October)
- The date and location is to be determined. As the school year gets rolling, we will be hosting a training on providing academic support to your mentee. Join us for tips and tricks on homework help and tutoring.
- November
- Mentor Social and Match Dinner: Bring your mentee for this one! Mentees will participate in a cooking lesson and prepare dinner for all to share, while mentors have a chance to chat. Join us at the Valley Youth Center, 727 North Central Avenue on November 12, 2008 from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. for some great conversation and food!
As always, we value feedback about what kind of training opportunities you would like to see and suggestions for improvements. If you have any questions, contact Callie at 722-4745, ext. 142. Please RSVP for trainings at 722-4745, ext. 120.
