Five Points

Five Points is a new tutoring program that takes place in several Duluth area schools. The goal of Five Points is to create meaningful relationships by connecting youth in grades 4-8 with volunteer tutor. Tutors are asked to make a commitment to meet with an individual youth for at least 45 minutes a week for the school year. Matches will meet at the school, either during the day or after school hours, depending on the site. A tutor may expect to help with homework, aid with specific subject areas, and participate in educational games and activities with the youth.

If you would like to tutor your existing mentee in school, know of someone who would be interested in becoming a tutor, or are a parent of a youth in these grades that could benefit from the academic help, please contact Nelle Rhicard at 722-4745, ext. 126 or nrhicard@duluthymca.org.

Match of the Month

Karla and Michelle

Karla and Michelle have been matched through Mentor Duluth for about a year, but have known each other for about four years through the Boys & Girls Club. Some of Karla and Michelle's favorite activities include baking, sleepovers, adventure walks along the Boardwalk, going out to eat at new restaurants, watching movies, looking at Christmas lights on Park Point, going to the Mentor Duluth hockey game, going out for ice cream and just talking. Some of the latest adventures have involved driver's training for Michelle. This has been a time for the two of them to really bond, and hang on for their lives!!! They also enjoy being active together, and have been known to run marathons together and they played in a soccer tournament this summer.

Karla and Michelle have nick-names for each other that they think perfectly describe them, Michelle is the "Dork Princess" and Karla is the "Dork Queen". Michelle says that Karla is one of the most fun people to hang out with, because they can just go crazy together! Michelle also says that she loves talking to Karla because she can relate to her and they have so much in common. Michelle says that Karla gives her advice and is always there for her. Karla has taught Michelle to stay strong when faced with peer pressure, never give up, and she can achieve anything she sets her mind to. Karla has also helped Michelle get along better with her family. They have developed a sister bond. They have had their ups and downs, but can't imagine their lives without each other. They both say they are really lucky to have one another and are sure they will make many more memories together!
