Mentor Trainings and Socials

We are working towards improving our training and support for our mentors. One way to do this is to provide opportunities for mentors to share and learn from each other with mentor socials. The socials will give mentors an opportunity to share stories, resources, ideas, or concerns about their matches. The socials will take place every other month at various times and locations. Mentor Duluth will provide refreshments and staff to help facilitate discussions. Additionally, watch for more formal and specific training sessions in the monthly newsletters. Here is what we have coming up:

Match of the Month

Zack has been matched with his mentor Eric for five years. The two were originally matched through the Men As Peacemakers program that allowed Eric to mentor him at school. Three years ago they decided to join Mentor Duluth and start doing things out in the community together.

They have gone through all kinds of activity "phases" as they grow together, like when Zack was in the fifth grade and they "couldn't get enough bowling!". They describe their times together as "active, never dull, and hilarious". They are always outside. Lately they have been getting into baseball; both playing and watching Eric on the team he plays for. Likewise, Eric went to Zack's basketball games. Eric chuckled as he reminisced about the time he went to Zack's football game and watched in down-pouring rain. Recently, they have also occupied themselves with floor hockey, going to the circus, and a monster truck show.

Zack likes having a mentor because he "helps with homework and encourages you to do the good stuff and not the bad stuff". Eric enjoys the relationship tremendously and thinks it's "cool seeing somebody change over the years". "I'm pretty sure I've made a difference" (to which Zack responsed with a "yeah"). The two see themselves staying matched and having fun through Zack's last year of middle school, into high school, and beyond.

Way to go Eric and Zack!!

Mentor Appreciation Garden

Mentors, we have a great summer gardening project for you and your mentee!

Call Mentor Duluth office at 722-4745, ext. 120 to sign up to help take care of the mentor appreciation garden in Leif Erickson Park. Let us know if you are interested in keeping our garden beautiful throughout the summer, or just for one afternoon.

The garden is located on the upper side of Leif Erickson Park, near the east entrance.

Homemade Bird Feeders

Watching their feathered friends eating from a homemade feeder will likely fill your little ornithologist with fascination -- and swell his heart with pride. Best of all, these seedy classics are a cinch to make. Be sure to hang them near a sturdy branch so your guests have a place to land while dining.

Toast master:
Help your child spread nut butter on a piece of toast. Cut the toast into a fun shape with a large cookie cutter, then poke a hole in the top with a skewer or straw. Let your child press the nut-butter side into a plate full of seeds. Thread a ribbon through the hole, knot the ends, and hang. (The feeder should last for at least a week, or until a downpour.)
Pine nut:
Smear nut butter onto a pinecone with a paintbrush until it's well coated. Give your child a ziplock bag filled with birdseed, then have him shake the pinecone in the bag until it's thoroughly covered with seeds. Tie a piece of ribbon around the end of the pinecone, knot the ends, and hang.
